Subcommittee Cites Areas
Probed By Growth Study

The enrollment subcommittee of the
Future of the University Committee
released last week an interim report citing
three major areas for study by committee
work groups.

The report also invited interested
individuals or groups to make statements
in an open meeting of the subcommittee
to be held next week.

The three areas of concentration listed
in the report are: institutional objectives
and capacity; environmental demands and
effects; and comparative experience of
other institutions.

"The group studying institutional
objectives and capacity will probe two
major areas," the report stated. Listed
were the University's mission and
purposes, and those of its component
parts, and the institution's physical
facilities, services, personnel
requirements, student institutions, and
financial needs.

With regard to institutional objectives,
the report said that survey and personal
interviews will be conducted with deans
and department chairmen throughout the
University to obtain a more explicative
view of component projections.

"The group working on
environmental demands and effects will
analyze factors largely outside the control
of the University, but which strongly
influence the directions in which the
University should move," stated the
report.

Factors to be studied include the
demand for higher education in the state
and nation, minority group demands, the
effects of the state legislature and effects
of growth on Charlottesville.

The comparative experience
work group plans to study the experiences
of other educational institutions both
inside and outside the state in order to
examine the effects of growth on
institutions "who faced our dilemma
some years ago."

The report stated that although
previous reports have been made
concerning growth, it was necessary to
reevaluate the situation.

The subcommittee's open meeting is
scheduled to be held in the South
Meeting Room of Newcomb Hall on
Wednesday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m.

The report urges that all students
interested in making a statement to the
committee regarding any aspect of
growth to contact the subcommittee
secretary, Ralph Eisenberg, at University
extension 3728.
