Shoot-Out At Corner Leaves
Two Wounded, Three Arrested

By MARK HOGREFE

Three arrests and two gunshot injuries
were the result of a confrontation behind
the University Avenue business area
Friday night.

Jay A. Stuart, 22, of Woodberry, New
Jersey and Charles Vest, 28, of North
Garden, Virginia were admitted to the
University Hospital shortly after the 8:30
incident.

Satisfactory Condition

Hospital Administrator William Lamm told
the Cavalier Daily that both men were resting
and in satisfactory condition Saturday night.
He reported that the incident involved a
Richmond "motorcycle gang" called the
Confederate Angels and a group of local black
men from North Garden.

Mr. Stuart, suffering form a gunshot wound
in the abdomen, rested in bed as he described
the incident. "It wasn't anything racial or
anything like that," he explained. When asked
whether action would be taken by the
"Angels" he declined to comment, and added,
"the less publicity the better."

Vest Released

Mr. Vest, who underwent treatment for a
bullet in his right hand, was released on Sunday
and was unavailable for comment.

David E. Johnson and James H. Henderson
of Covesville were arrested along with Guy A.
Alton of Richmond by Charlottesville police
and charged with felonious assault. Police
reported that all three had been released on
bond yesterday.

An article in the Daily Progress reported
Saturday that the incident involved some 17
youths in what police had termed "a conflict
between two groups." Police, however,
declined to comment Sunday.

Several bystanders said that the incident
appeared to be an argument between the
Angels and some blacks, climaxing with the
shootings.

Angry Gang

One witness described the scene as "About
fifteen very angry Angels and a few blacks
sitting in a shot-up 64 Ford." They were being
held by "about twenty or so police." An
ambulance arrived to take away the body "of a
man who appeared dead" in front of the
University Market.

Although no one was killed two men were
injured.
