College Students Enroll For Fall Semester;
Language Requirement Remains In Effect

By Neill Alford III
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Pre-registration materials for students
in the College of Arts and Sciences will be
available in the lobby of Old Cabell Hall
next week.

Students may pick up their schedule
cards and return them after their
completion between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
from Monday, April 19, through Friday,
April 23.

The Registrar's Office advises students
that there is no need to be overly hasty
about returning the cards, since none will be
processed before all are returned.

Students planning to declare their majors
may pick up a declaration form when they
receive their pre-registration material. They
should then take their material to a
departmental advisor and set up a majors
program.

Those who are not declaring a major should
discuss their proposed schedules with their
resident advisors or association deans.

Pre-registration for pass/fail courses no
longer requires a Special Condition Request
card. Instead, the student should pre-register
for a pass/fail course in the same manner as he
would register for a graded course. He must
make pass/fail arrangements for the course in
the fall.

Students are advised to make use of the two
books containing class information. The white
book contains class time, place, and size, and
also provides the schedule for exams. The gold
1971-72 course catalog, which may be obtained
at Newcomb Hall and at the Admissions Office,
may be used to find brief course descriptions
and to check prerequisites.

Students must continue their foreign
language courses without a semester's
interruption until they have completed, the
College language requirement. The Registrar's
Office advises that there is no indication that
the faculty will modify this requirement in the
next few years. They warn that students who
postpone fulfillment of the requirement may
have to attend summer school to finish it.

The Student Council Curriculum Evaluation
Report is for the first time available to students
before pre-registration. The report attempts to
analyze the strengths and weaknesses of
undergraduate courses. Copies are on sale at the
main desk in Newcomb Hall for $1.

The University Major program is open to
students wishing to concentrate in a subject
which crosses departmental lines. Any student
interested in such a program should notify his
Dean no later than four semesters before
graduation. Study programs for this major must
be approved by the Associate Dean for Special
Programs and the Committee on Special
Programs. Applicants must hold at least a 2.5
average. Further information is available from
Associate Dean Marcus Mallett.

The 1971 summer school will run from June
21 to August 14 for the regular eight-week
session, June 14 to July 2 for the education
intersession, and July 6 to August 14 for the
six-week session.

Students planning to enroll in summer
school should file their intent to register on
cards available in the summer session office in
Garrett Hall. These cards should be filed before
May 1. Pre-registration extends from May 10 to
May 21.
