Debaters
Place First
In Tourney

Last weekend thy Virginia Varsity Debaters
captured first place in the Mid-Atlantic
Regional tournament held at Fairmont State
College from which the three top teams will
advance to the nationals.

Competing with all the colleges and
universities from New Jersey to Virginia and
West Virginia, the University squad defeated
such teams as George Washington. Navy,
William and Mary, Rutgers, Slippery Rock
State, State Teachers College ST. Peter's
College, and the University of Scranton.

University Student Jim Poe was named
second speaker for the Seventh District and
teammate Greg Bittner was named sixth
speaker in the overall competition. The team
will go to McAlister College in Minnesota
during April for the Nationals, with Ivan Rich
the sponsor and John Graham Associate Dean
the overhead supervisor.

The novice debate teams were also
successful this weekend, at the Regional
tournament held at Virginia Intermont. The
number one unit finished first and the number
two unit placed sixth. Virginia speakers placed
well with Rick Robol placing first, David
McCaskey fourth, Ellen Lewis twelfth, and
Jim Calder thirteenth. The team will now
advance to the National Novice Tournament
during semester break.
