Emigration Officials
Summon Crew Coach

By Gordon Peerman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The University's crew coach, Panos
Eliades, has been summoned to meet with
U.S. Emigration officers today, and it is
feared that Mr. Eliades may be denied
the right to work in the United States.

Mr. Eliades will appear before the
Office of Emigration and Naturalization
with his attorney, Magruder Dent.

When contacted yesterday afternoon,
Mr. Dent stated that neither he nor his
client actually knows the reason for the
summons. They only know that Mr. Eliades is
to appear for a physical and a conference to
follow; both take place today. Mr. Eliades is of
Greek nationality.

According to some members of the crew
team, Mr. Eliades fears that because he has not
obtained United States citizenship, he may be
denied the right to work. He is currently
employed by an accounting firm in
Charlottesville.

Mr. Eliades, who has made major
contributions to the crew program, is a former
Greek sculls champion and half of the Europe
- pairs champion. Under his tutelage, the crew
team made rapid strides last year, ending the
season with strong finishes in several important
races.

Since crew is not a University-sponsored
sport, Mr. Eliades is not employed by the
University. Today's meeting should bring to
light his future status as a non-citizen resident
in the United States and as crew coach.
