Students Vie For Offices
In Dormitory Elections
Rick Pearson
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Refrigerators will be the main issue as
the residents of the Alderman Road
dormitories vote Monday night for
officers of their Alderman Road Legislative
Council.
The voting, which will be completed
by 9 that night, will take place in the
dormitory suites. Representatives of the
Legislative Council from each floor will
conduct the voting among his constituents
and then turn in the printed ballots
to a central headquarters.
The Alderman Road Legislative Council
is the main governing body for the
upperclass and graduate dormitory residents of
Alderman Road, along with the Alderman
Judiciary Committee.
The election is dominated by two separate
tickets, each presenting three candidates for the
offices of President, Vice President, and
Secretary-Treasurer. Heading the respective
tickets are James Robinson and Alan Featherstone.
Mr. Robinson, a third-year man in the
College, and Mr. Featherstone, a College
second-year man, are both presently representatives
to the Legislative Council.
Running for Vice President with Mr.
Featherstone is Richard Hickman, also a
second-year man on the Legislative Council,
and the candidate for Secretary-Treasurer is
second-year man Doug Golden.
Ben Shaw, a second-year Legislative Council
representative, is the candidate for Vice
President with Mr. Robinson, and second-year
man Sheldon Price is the candidate for
Secretary-Treasurer.
In the early campaigning, the major
difference between the candidates has been
their stands on the issue of refrigerators in
dormitory rooms.
Both slates of candidates have supported the
idea and have criticized Ralph Main, Director of
Housing, who has repeatedly vetoed the motion
after it passed the Alderman Road Committee.
The candidates differ in their methods of
pursuing the issue.
Mr. Robinson believes the Council ought to
try to force Mr. Main to call a committee to
settle the issue, as he is bound by the Alderman
Road Constitution.
Mr. Featherstone, however, points out that
Mr. Main has vowed never to allow
refrigerators, and that to continue to force the
issue would be a waste of time and effort.
Instead, he says the Council ought to work for
the many other needs of the Alderman Road
residents.
