In Red Herring Affair
Council Decries Ejections
By Barry Levine
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Reacting to the expulsion of student
at the Alvin Ailey performance for
distributing The Virginia Weekly, the
Student Council last night voiced its
opposition to similar expulsions in the
future.
Councilman Tom Gardner, one of the
two students removed, made the proposition
to prohibit the restriction of "any individual or organization from exercising
the Constitutionally-protected rights to
leaflet, picket...as long as such activity
does not seriously disrupt or obstruct
another scheduled or ongoing activity..."
"Forcibly Removed"
Al Long, editor of The Virginia
Weekly, was the other student who was
"forcibly removed" by the police. John
Herring, director of the Artist Series,
ordered the removal due to their distributing
The Virginia Weekly to the patrons.
According to Mr. Gardner, Mr. Herring
justified his action by "saying that the hall had
been leased, and, evidently, we were not
allowed to distribute in the building if it was
leased."
The motion specifically refers to "access
areas" in all University buildings. "If we had
moved to outside the doors." Mr. Gardner said,
"then we would have obstructed the crowd.
Besides, it was raining out."
This action will change the Council regulations
to protect such picketing or ,
and it requests the University to incorporate
the resolution in official regulations.
Mr. Gardner said that student rights in such
cases had been insured by Robert T. Canevari,
Dean of Students, "but only verbally to
Council members. This [motion] insures it in
writing, so that our rights would not be violated
in the future."
Easters Changes
The recent change in the date for Easters
Weekend brought the Council's anger to bear
on PK-German Dance Society and the University.
Vice President Kevin Mannix's motion
passed overwhelmingly, requesting refunds to
"students who will not be able to get refunds
for already contracted motel rooms on fraternity
bands."
Easters Weekend was originally scheduled
for April 11 and 12, but was changed to April
18 and 19. The change was made by the
University Committee for Calendar and
Scheduling to coincide with the Senior-Alumni
football game, but Mr. Mannix contends that
PK-German was "equally guilty because they acquiesced in the move."
Some students have already made motel
reservations for the new date.
