Council Concert Report
Forms Standing Committee
Student Council approved the
report of its own Concert Study
Committee Wednesday night and
the committee's recommendation
that a Concert Coordinating Committee
should be established as a
regular University Committee.
The report, prepared by Steve
Hayes, Charles Ribakoff, Tommy
Steele, and Kevin Mannix, who
chaired the Committee, ask for a
Concert Coordinating Committee
composed of one Student Council
representative, the president of the
University Union, one representative
for the PK and German dance
societies, three University administrators
and faculty, a representative
of small concert-holding groups,
and a student (not on the Student
Council) "with a knowledge of
music."
It was suggested by the Concert
Study Committee that the three
administrators should be John A.
Herring, the director of Newcomb
Hall. Evan J. Male, Assistant Director
of Athletics (who is in-charge of
reserving University Hall) and Paul
Saunier, Jr., Director of University
Relations.
The committee also suggested
that the representative of the small
concert-holding should be selected
by the heads of all small groups
which presented a concert within
the previous year.
The Concert Study Committee
also recommended that the Student
Council consider requesting a raise
in the Student Activities Fee of
"approximately one dollar" in
order to create a fund for the
subsidizing of major concerts,
lessening the ticket price.
Their concerts are subsidized by
approximately $2 per person per
year.
The recommendations made by
the committee are expected to be
implemented in the fall.
In other business Tuesday night,
the Council heard appeals from five
groups who were dissatisfied with
their allocation from the Student
Activities Fund. The only group
that succeeded in getting more
funds was the radio station,
which was granted nearly $600
more.
To get that money, the Council
imposed a 5 per cent cut in the
allocations already granted the
Athletic Clubs at the University.
The councilmen felt that the
athletic department should give
more support to the club teams
than it does.
Student Council President on
Hickman reported that he had
received a check for $50 from the
Young Men's Shop in Charlottesville
for the transition program. The
Council had sent out letters to
various industries in the state asking
for contributions.
Mr. Hickman also said that the
School of Architecture had raised
$112 for the station and
$50 for the King
Scholarship fund.
He also read a message from
President Shannon that stated that
as of April more than $7000 had
been deposited with the
program.
Mr. Hickman then read a letter
from the three society after which
a brief debate took place on
whether to include the letter in the
minutes of the Council
as the group was not vetted by
the Council. It was decided not to
include it in its minutes
