Takes Over Today
Hite To Direct New CD Staff
By Tom Adams
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Charles A. Hite, III was elected
the first Publisher of The Cavalier
Daily at staff elections that were
held before spring vacation. Robert
B. Cullen was chosen by the staff as
the newspaper's first editor.
Both of these positions were
created to replace the job of
Editor-in- Chief. This change was
approved by the newspaper staff
and the vice presidents of the
various schools of the University
for incorporation into the constitution
of The Cavalier Daily.
The constitution now specifies
that the Publisher has general
administrative and supervisory authority
over all departments, and is
ultimately responsible for editorial
policy. The Editor is exclusively
responsible for editorial writing
with the approval of the Publisher.
The decision to divide the duties
of the Editor-in-Chief was made
because of the increasing demands
of the job. It is hoped that the
change will allow the Editor more
time to research and write the
editorials and leave the Publisher
adequate time to direct the overall
operation and establish policy of
the newspaper.
Roderick O. MacDonald was
elected Managing Editor and Roy P.
Bishop was chosen Business Manager.
The Managing Editor has the
direct responsibility for the layout
of the news pages and general
supervisory powers over all literary
departments. The Business Manager
has general supervisory powers over
the advertising, and circulation
departments.
In elections for positions on the
Junior Board, Thomas Adams was
chosen News Editor, James Steer
was elected Features Editor,
Michael Russell was elected Monday
Edition Editor, and Hugh
Antrim and Steve Giannini were
elected Sports Editors.
A change was made in the
constitution to make the Monday
Edition Editor a member of the
Junior Board of the newspaper.
Stefan Lopatkiewicz was elected
Wire Editor.
