Cost Of Transition Fund
Explained By Sedgewick

The following is an open letter to the faculty from Alexander
Sedgewick, associate professor of History, about the transitional
program.

The University has initiated plans for a transitional program that
will provide tutoring this summer in Charlottesville for between twenty
and thirty culturally disadvantaged students with academic potential.
The program should enable them to become regularly enrolled
undergraduates at the University in September 1969. The admissions
office has tentatively earmarked a number of potential applicants for
the program, the cost of which will be between $20,000-$25,000. This
cost includes room, board, teaching, counseling, and other incidental
expenses. The administration has committed $5,300, but the rest will
have to come from donations. Mr. Rawls Jones, a third-year man in the
college, is coordinating a student drive which he hopes will net
$10,000. The faculty is also asked to contribute $10,000. There are
some 1000 faculty members, and if each donated $20, this would not
only meet the faculty share of the cost, but it would also provide funds
for the program the following year.

A program launched in the sesquicentennial year by the students
and faculty of the University to provide educational opportunities for
those who would otherwise be unable to afford them and to enable the
University to play a greater role in enriching the social environment of
the community as a whole seems most appropriate. I urge you to
contribute generously to this program which, unless supported by us
now, will not go into effect this year. Checks should be made out to
"Transition-U. Va." and sent to me at Cabell Hall B-24. If you cannot
contribute a lump sum, please send me a pledge to be contributed over
a period of three months (April-June 1969). If you have any questions
about the nature of the program call 3006.
