Lawn Demonstration Planned
Today from noon to 1 p.m. and
tomorrow from noon to 1:30 p.m.
there will be demonstrations on the
Lawn urging more active University
efforts toward greater integration
of the University, beginning with
"changes in the composition of the
Board of Visitors."
Sponsors of the demonstration
include Robert Rosen, chairman of
Rapier magazine; Ed Hayes,
president of the Inter-Fraternity
Council and chairman of
counselors; Richard Gwathmey,
editor of The Cavalier Daily;
George Shipley, president of the
University Union; Rick Evans,
former president of the Student
Council; and Ron Hickman,
president of the Student Council.
They have called for the
attendance of "all members of the
University community who support
the goals of racial equality and
social justice, who think this
University, from the Board of
Visitors on down, has not yet
offered the constructive leadership
in this area, of which it is capable
and who are concerned about the
fact that opposition to racism is
associated only with radicals."
Pieter Schenkkan, a Rhodes
Scholar-elect and spokesman for
the group emphasized, in an
interview with The Cavalier Daily
yesterday, that "this is not a radical
event. Steve Squire has
disassociated the SDS and the
Southern Student Organizing
Committee from it.
"We think it is important to
show the leaders of the State of
Virginia that progress toward social
justice is too slow and their efforts
insufficient. We think it is also
important to show them, their
constituents, and the whole nation,
that a lot of us, who wear coats and
ties, dislike violence, prefer
established channels, and have little
affection for SDS tactics, agree
with the radicals on some goals," he
said.
The demonstrations were
prompted by events Saturday
which started with an SDS demand
for the resignation of Chase Stuart
Wheatley from the Board of
Visitors. SSOC research uncovered
the fact that Mr. Wheatley led the
massive resistance movement in the
Virginia House of Delegates.
The student leaders organizing
today's demonstration have sent a
telegram to Mr. Wheatley
apologizing on behalf of the
student body for the defacement of
his car Saturday by unknown
persons, but they urged an
"immediate reply...to clarify your
position...on the issue of race and
the responsibility of the University
to all of the people of the State."
