Massive Demonstration Planned

Wilson Discusses Inauguration

With many of the "radical, New
Left, student organizations
planning to converge on
Washington, D.C., John Wilson,
staff member of the National
Mobilization Committee, will speak
on Inauguration, 1969 in the
Newcomb Hall Ballroom at 9 p.m.

Mr. Wilson will be speaking to
an audience in downtown
Charlottesville earlier in the
evening. He is presently serving as
chairman of the National Black
Anti-war Anti-draft Union and as a
staff member of the Student
Non-violent Coordinating
Committee and the National
Mobilization To End The War in
Vietnam. The talk will cover a
variety of topics focusing on
President Nixon, his cabinet, and
what they are expected to be like
on the important issues that face
them.

This program is being presented
jointly by the SSOC and the SDS.
As a member of the National
Mobilization Committee, Mr.
Wilson will probably talk about the
massive demonstration being
planned for the eve of Mr. Nixon's
inauguration. This committee
consists of staff from many of the
new left organizations.

The National Mobilization
Committee is arranging the
demonstration for this time
"because of the urgency to step up
pressure for an immediate
withdrawal and to let Nixon know
that peace forces will not relax until
American forces withdraw from
Vietnam. To a future of "law and
order," and to Nixon, whose vision
of military power begins at home
and extends around the globe, we
must say that this movement will
not be repressed, divided or
ignored."

Prior to the inauguration the
SSOC will be setting up a Southern
Movement Center in downtown
Washington to serve all of its
members that come. Other
organizations participating in the
demonstration will have similar
headquarters. The purpose of these
centers will be to provide a meeting
place, a communications center,
and housing and food for the
participants.

Students at the University will
be in the middle of semester
examinations during these events.
Many students from schools on the
quarter system are expected to
attend besides the many other
distinguished people that are
expected to be present.

Saturday, January 18, a press
conference is planned by the SSOC
at Sherman's Statue across from the
White House to publicize the
Southern Movement Center; to
discuss Yankee Imperialism and the
colonial status of the South; and
the concept of "Total War," which
was founded by Gen. Sherman.
Later in the day national
conferences and workshops are to
be conducted at Federal City
College in D.C. These will involve
members from all of the
organizations demonstrating in
Washington.

A massive peace march, led by
GIs and veterans is being scheduled
for Sunday, January 19. The events
for Monday, the actual day of the
inauguration of Nixon, will be
decided by the Movement Centers.
A Counter Inaugural Ball is
sponsored by the YIPPIES and
planned for that evening.

In a recent meeting the national
body of the SDS decided not to
sponsor this demonstration. Local
chapters are expected to attend
anyway. The area SDS chapters will
probably arrange to welcome
members of their organization that
may come into Washington for the
weekend.

The SSOC's Southern
Movement Center is oriented
particularly for people from the
south. They have urged that anyone
coming should bring confederate
banners with imaginative new
symbols; sleeping bags and
blankets; helmets, and some
money.
