Visitors Adopt 2.0 Plan
Easing Vehicle Rules

By Mike Russel
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

In a long awaited move, this
summer the Virginia Board of
Visitors adopted a new car policy
more liberally oriented towards
student drivers.

Their resolution was prompted
by the great quantity of student
discussion and co-operation with
the administration last year. As the
rule now stands, any student with a
2.0 for his last semester at the
University and who is not receiving
financial aid, is eligible for motor
vehicle privileges.

With registration still
incomplete, it appears that this
academic year will see the greatest
number of cars in the history of the
University.

At the end of registration
Wednesday, there had been a total of
1200 cars registered at the second
floor booth in Newcomb Hall. As
of noon yesterday the number of
cars had reached the 2100 mark.
There are still no complete figures
available since registration is still in
progress.

Commensurate with the rising
numbers of cars have been
necessary changes in automobile
regulations and parking regulations
on the grounds. Most severely
affected are the parking regulations
as the Department of Security vies
to provide adequate parking spaces
for the number of students with
cars.

Students will be allowed to park
at all times on Scott Stadium's east
and west lots and the Whitehead
Road lot except from midnight
Friday till Saturday afternoon at
the end of home football games.
Parking is allowed on McCormick
Road between Bonneycastle and
Hancock Drives, on the northeast
sides by the residence halls only.

Three lots on Emmet Street
between Memorial gymnasium and
the McCormick Road overpass are
open to student parking except for
the inner lot by the squash courts,
where students can park between 6
p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Hancock Drive
is open to students as well as
Bonneycastle lot and Newcomb
Road from McCormick Road to the
corner of Tucker house. Students
may park on the Observatory Hill
lot, Cemetery Drive, Cemetery lot
on Alderman Road, and Alderman
Road lot opposite Tuttle house.
Parking is also permitted on
Alderman Road, Courteney house
lot, Edgemont Road lot, and the
McCormick Road lot opposite
Watson House.

Other areas of the Grounds
where students may park their cars
are limited to the times when
parking is allowed. These areas are
open to students from 6 p.m. to
7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday
and after 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Limited parking may be found
on the Law, West Cabell Hall and
Amphitheatre lots, Hospital Drive,
Rouss Drive and Randall house lot,
Brandon Avenue, Thomton Hall
lot, the Physics lot, Rouss lot and
Monroe Hill lot. Students may also
leave their cars on McCormick
Road except as otherwise marked,
McGuffey Drive, Newcomb Road
from the corner of Tucker house to
University Avenue, the inner gym
lot, and the Fifteenth Street lot.
Parking on Hospital Drive is limited
to patrons of the Hospital only.

Changes in the road plan have
been made around the University to
speed the flow of traffic. It is no
longer possible for students to turn
on to McCormick Road from
University Avenue at the light.
Instead, in order to make the turn a
car must go past Rugby to the
appropriate entrance. Traffic from
Rugby Road can, however, still
enter McCormick Road at the light.
These changes are hoped to speed
traffic through the intersection.

Other changes include the
removal of the left turn ramp at the
intersection of Route 29 and 250
West. Now the turn is made with
the aid of a special light.

Along with the new parking
regulations have come new fines for
parking in the wrong places. First
offenders will be charged the fee of
two dollars for their mistake.
