Happy Day
Union Sponsors Concerts, Games

University Union is
sponsoring "Happy Day
Weekend," a two-day festival
of concerts and games on
Friday and Saturday.
Friday's events will kick off
with a free open air concert by
"Flagstone" in the Lile-Maupin
Arena from 4-8 p.m. Chicken,
soft drinks and beer will be
sold outside Tuttle from 5:30
to 6:30 p.m.
A fireworks display will be
held in Lambeth Field from
9:30 to 10 p.m. with a film
festival to follow from 10:30
p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in the
Lile-Maupin Arena.
"Happy Day" on Saturday
will feature an all-day Artisans
Bazar in the Newcomb Hall
Ballroom. Thirty-five artists
from Central Virginia will
display a variety of crafts,
including pottery, paintings
and batiks.
Rock Band
The remainder of
Saturday;s events will take
place in the fields adjacent, to
Memorial Gymnasium. A rock
band will perform from 10
a.m. to 12 noon.
Contests
Bike races from 10:30 to
11:45 will feature a 10 mile
men's senior race, a three-mile
women's senior race and a one
mile junior race for both sexes.
Prizes and trophies will be
awarded and the competition is
open to all interested students.
The rescue squad and the
fire department will compete
in a tug-of-war from 11:45 to
noon. A sack race between
Sheriff Bailey and Sheriff ace
will be run from noon to 12:15
p.m. Immediately following
the race, the "Magnificent
Mosses" will perform magic
tricks until 1 p.m.
From 1 to 1:15 students are
invited to participate in a pie
eating contest. Albemarle High
School will present skits after
the pie contest until 1:50 and
the "University Jazz
Ensemble" will take over the
entertainment from 2 to 3 p.m.
Trike Race
From 3 to 3:30 p.m.,
students can participate in a
trike race, after which WFJU
will compete with WUVA in a
tug-of-war until 3:45 p.m.
A basketball shoot and a
water balloon toss will be
featured from 3:45 to 4 p.m.,
with an egg toss to follow until
4:15.
From 4 to 6 p.m. a blue
grass band will perform, while
magician Bill McIlhany from
Lexington, Ky. will entertain
from 4:15 to 5 p.m.
At 8 p.m. P.K. German will
present folk singer James
Taylor at U-Hall.
Besides these scheduled
events, the Union will hold
competitive events throughout
Happy Day.
