Council Approves Salary
For Student Officers

By TOM TANTON

Student Council last night
approved monthly salaries of
$60 and $50 respectively for
its president and vice president
contingent on the approval of
the Student Activities
Committee (SAC).

College Representative Kip
Klein said that he believed that
salaries for Council President
and Vice President are well
deserved because of the heavy
workload inherent in these
positions. In defense of his
proposal, he cited benefits
received by other student
leaders, such as the Honor
Committee Chairman and
Resident Staff members, for
their work.

In a Council meeting held
Tuesday night, Law student
Christian White appealed
Council allocations to 45
University organizations. in
what was termed by one
individual as "illogical"
interpretation of the English
language.

"Mr. White was merely
engaging in a formality by
bringing his appeals before
Council and was really
interested in taking his case
before the Board of Visitors, or
possibly the courts," Vice
President Larry Sabato said. He
added that Mr. White was
interested in "eliminating or
restricting the Student
Activities fee." Council denied
all of Mr. White's appeals and
he will now appeal to the SAC.

In addition, Council denied
a request by the Young
Americans for Freedom for an
allocation of $150, saying that
the YAF did not engage in
political activities per se, but
rather espoused a particular
political philosophy and was
thereby ineligible for funding
due to the Board of Visitors
recent Gay Student Union
decision.

Council also approved a
motion last night for a five
dollar social fee to be payed by
each dormitory resident
contingent upon the passage of
a referendum concerning this

increase. In debating this
proposal, College
representative Paul Freeman
said that approval of such a
motion without a referendum
would bring Council's rationale
concerning the Student
Activities fee into question.

In addition, Council
President Jim Rinaca informed
Council that the INA insurance
company has assured him that
there would be no increase in
the cost of student insurance
next year.
