Food Services Policy
'Offers No Solution'
By SUZY LAWSON
Initiation of a plan to
release students from cafeteria
contracts has been the First
Year Council (FYC) Food
Services Committee's major
accomplishment this year, FYC
President John Attanasio said
yesterday.
"Getting off the contract is
not a permanent solution," Mr.
Attanasio said in response to a
resolution defeated Tuesday
night by Student Council.
Council Resolution
The resolution stated that
Council "thoroughly deplored"
University Food Services'
policy of year-long contracts
and requirement of sale of a
contract to another student in
order to be released from the
contract. Council members
defeated the resolution by a
five to eight vote.
Although the majority of
Council favored the resolution,
it was defeated since the
Student Council Food Services
Committee is now considering
the problem and will present a
more researched and defined
presentation.
Committee chairman Taylor
Putney was unavailable for
comment.
'Bit Of Misunderstanding'
"There has been a little bit
of misunderstanding on
everybody's part," explained
Mr. Attanasio. "Taylor wasn't
there (at the Council meeting)
so no one really knew what
this decision on the contracts
means. When he gets back he
will make the situation clear.
Mr. Attanasio has discussed
with Food Services Director
Bernard C. Fontana the
possibility of beginning a
semester contract plan. Mr.
Fontana said that when there
was a semester plan for
contracts, fewer persons signed
up for semester tickets than for
yearly tickets.
According to Mr. Attanasio,
Mr. Fontana cited "certain
other reasons why the semester
plan would not work."
At present, if a student
wishes to complain about
Contract Cafeteria, he may
speak to one of the Contract
managers.
If the managers take no
action, Mr. Fontana himself
will act on the problem.
The FYC Food Services
Committee plans another
meeting with Mr. Fontana and
other Food Services staff to
change the menu. "This will be
difficult to do at this time,
however," asserted Mr.
Attanasio, "as the food is
ordered in advance."
