Pre-Legal
Advising
Begins

By LIBBY WITHERS

A pre-law advising office has
recently been formed to
counsel pre-law undergraduates
on the selection of law schools.

"We operate principally
through counseling on a
one-to-one basis," third-year
law student Mike Smith, a
committee member, said.

Besides advising, the office
provides students with
recommendation and
certification forms needed for
law school application. These
forms are kept on file and sent
to the various law schools to
which the student applies.

"To assist in advising, we
have approximately one
hundred different law school
catalogs, as well as statistics
on University graduates in
1972–their success or failure
in applying to law school," Mr.
Smith said.

This committee is in the
process of drafting a pre-law
guide for University students.
The guide will include law
school placement figures,
University students' law board
scores over the past three
years, information about the
advising program, and
preparations needed for
out-of-state law schools.

To further assist pre-law
students, the office will arrange
interviews for them with
various law schools. These
interviews will be announced
through The Cavalier Daily.

Mr. Smith stressed that
"pre-law students should come
in and meet with the advisors,
even if they are only
first-year." Pre-law students
should "become familiar with
the office, data, and services
available to them," Mr. Smith
said.

The Pre-Law Advising
Office is a branch of the Office
of Career Planning and
Placement. It is located in 5
Minor Hall and is staffed by six
second and third-year law
students who plan all interview
arrangements and handle all
pre-law advising.
