Ex-WTJU Staffer Found Searching Files

By TIM WHEELER
AND PAT GRANEY

A former WTJU radio staff
member, in the company of
third-year law student
Christian White and
fourth-year College student
Edwin Carlisle, both
challengers of student funding
for student organizations, was
discovered examining records
and files of the FM station in
their studios in Humphrey's
House Basement Thursday
night.

A WTJU engineer, first-year
student Joe Miano, found
fourth-year student Sandy
Williams holding an engineer's
report from the program file
when he entered the main
studio. Mr. Miano explained
that Mr. Williams had taken
the file without authorization
and had been conferring with
Mr. White.

Station Manager Joe
Bourdow conjectured that Mr.
Carlisle, a WUVA asst. news
editor, "tried to get our people
down into the engineering
room by expressing a
professional interest in seeing
the station's new stereo
equipment. When Mr. Miano
and Mr. Carlisle returned to
the main studio, they found
Mr. Williams with the file.

"I asked Chris personally
what they were up to, "Mr.
Miano explained. After getting
no satisfactory explanation,
Mr. Miano said he told the
three, "Right now I expect
that your motives are not of
the best character. Would you
please leave until I can get
permission for you to be here

Mr. White discounted
the incident yesterday, saying
it was "no big thing". He
explained that he had just
been "wandering and looking"
on "one of my
general-purpose wander-ins."
He did admit, however, that
Mr. Williams had shown him
"one part" of a file from the
station's records.

"It came up among the
three of us that we might go
up to WTJU," Mr. White said.
"It was rather an up in the air
thing."

Mr. Carlislealso
said that their visit in no way
involved the appeals, but "If
he (Mr. Williams) is not a
member of the station, he had
no business in there(the
files)." Mr. Carlisle denied any
personal involvement, and said
that he was just there waiting
for a ride.

Mr. White denied, however,
that his presence in the
studio had anything to do
with the appeals he and Mr.
Carlisle have filed with the
Student Activities Committee
(SAC) over the funding of
some 43 student
organizations, including
WTJU.

According to a member of
the SAC, Mr. White and Mr.
Carlisle have already presented
their case against WTJU.
However, "I suppose that they
can bring up any other
evidence they have at anytime
before the entire appealing
process is over," he added.
