Council Urges Voicing
Of Vietnam Discontent
By SAM BARNES
Student Council Tuesday night urged
student expression of Vietnam war
discontent and indicated its support for
the Future of the University's recent
future growth report.
In view of recent anti-war activities on
the Grounds, Council voted 13 to 3 to
"urge students to participate
in activities of their choosing to express
their discontent with the current war."
In a related resolution Council
demanded President Richard Nixon and
Congress to "act at once to end the war."
Council called for cessation of all
bombing throughout Indochina and an
end to all American aid and support for
the Thieu government.
The resolution further requested the
president to set a specific date for
withdrawal of all American troops from
Indochina. In addition it called for an
immediate return to the Paris Peace
Talks.
Council Supports Committee
In other action Council voiced general
support for the Future of the University
Committee's report but outlined several
reservations concerning aspects of the
report.
Council members said they could only
support the report's Plan B, which calls
for a 15,091 head count by 1980. The
report also offers Plan A, calling for a
16,054 head count by that date. Council
also urged that efforts be made to
preserve the University's high
out-of-state/in-state student ratio, as
opposed to the Future committee
recommendation that the in-state student
proportion increase over the next few
years.
Council further called for a University
Committee charged with supervision of
space conversion "to insure that space
adequately serves the educational needs
of the University."
Administration Warned
"By stating these reservations, we give
a warning to the administration that these
are the things we will object to over the
next few years," Council president Tom
Collier said.
In response to the addition of a 12th
story to Lambeth Field apartment plans,
council expressed "opposition to the
additional height and obtrusiveness of the
building."
Council also expressed opposition to
the "questionable manner in which an
extra story was added to the Lambeth
Field high-rise" complex.
Architectural Changes Unreported
Plans for 12th and 13th stories were
reportedly presented to a meeting of the
Lambeth Field Committee before several
committee members had received notice
of such architectural changes.
Architects requested the two floors'
addition so that the high rises would
"blend" effectively into the mountain
side.
Although the proposed 13th floor was
eliminated, the committee voted to retain
the 12th story.
"We could not for any reason accept
more than one high-rise facility on this
plot of land in the future," Council
added.
Council also forwarded to the
committee a report compiled by several
architecture students expressing student
concern about the high rise facilities and
"the urgent need for more student
housing."
