Senator Scott Joins Barrett,
Potter On Board Of Visitors

Governor Linwood Holton named
U.S. Senator Hugh Scott (R.-Pa.), C.
Waller Barrett of Charlottesville, and
William S. Potter of Wilmington,
Delaware to the Board of Visitors
yesterday.

Senator Scott, the only new
appointment, replaces Richard Cross,
who was ineligible for reappointment. Mr.
Scott will serve a four-year term expiring
February 1975.

The appointment of Senator Scott
ended speculation that the Governor
would appoint a black visitor as sought by the
Student Council, which made two nominations
for the position.

Mr. Scott, who is Senate minority leader,
has been a Senator from Pennsylvania since
1958. He was elected minority leader in
September 1969, following the death of Everett
Dirksen. Mr. Scott is a member of the Senate
Committees on Commerce, Judiciary, Rules,
and Small Business. He is also a member of the
Minority Police Committee.

Senator Scott stated yesterday, "I can think
of no higher honor than to be called to serve on
the Board of Visitors of the University. I
welcome the opportunity to do so. I am most
grateful to the Governor for this honor and also
appreciate the recommendations of those
whose good opinion of me made this
appointment possible." Mr. Scott added that he
plans to attend the Law Day ceremonies and
activities on May 1.

A native of Fredericksburg, Mr. Scott
received his bachelor's degree from
Randolph-Macon College in 1919 and his law
degree from the University in 1922. While a
student at the University Mr. Scott was
Secretary of the Jefferson Society.

Congressman Scott

Prior to his election to the Senate, Mr. Scott
served as Representative to the Sixth District of
Pennsylvania for 16 years. As Congressman, Mr.
Scott served as a member of the House Policy
Committee.

Senator Scott became a member of the
Virginia Bar in 1921 and the Pennsylvania Bar
in 1922. He practiced law in Philadelphia and
acted as a counsel and assistant district
attorney.

He also served as Chairman of the
Republican National Committee for 1948-49,
Chairman of the regional organization
committee for the Eisenhower campaign in
1952, and general counsel for the National
Committee for 1955-60. He is a member of the
American, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia bar
associations and Phi Beta Kappa.

C. Waller Barrett

Mr. Barrett, an alumnus and benefactor of
the University, graduated from the University
in 1920, and is currently President and
Chairman of Norgulf Corporation. He is a
director of Eastern Broadcasting Corporation
and is also a member of the New York City Art
Commission.

In addition to serving as Chairman of the
Fellows of the Pierpont Morgan Library, Mr.

Barrett is a trustee of the McGregor Library at
the University. He is a trustee of the New York
Public Library and a member of the Board of
Regents of the James Monroe Memorial
Library.

Mr. Barrett is also a trustee of the University
Alumni Fund, the Thomas Jefferson
Foundation, and Sweet Briar College.

Well-known for his contributions to the
University. Mr. Barrett is the founder of the
Clifton Waller Barrett Library of American
Literature.

Potter Reappointed

Mr. Potter, a resident of Wilmington,
Delaware, was appointed to his second term. He
is a Director of Hopeton Holding Company and
Wilmington Trust Company.

A member of the Board of Directors of the
Wilmington Medical Center, Mr. Potter is also a
Trustee of the Episcopal Church Scholarship
Foundation and a chancellor of the
Episcopalian Diocese of Delaware.

Having received his LL.B. from the
University in 1927, he is a member of the
American Bar Association and the Delaware Bar
Association, and served as President of the
Delaware association from 1942 to 1944.

Mr. Potter is a member of the Democratic
National Committee and a director of the
Delaware Racing Association.

Kevin Mannix, Student Council President,
stated that the Council was pleased at the
reappointment of Mr. Barrett and Mr. Potter.
