Richard M. Nixon

Invited To Appear Here

The Student Legal Forum has invited
President Richard M. Nixon to speak at
the University this spring, informed
sources reported yesterday.

Kit Sumner, President of the Legal
Forum, apparently has made the overture
to President Nixon through the office of
Virginia Governor Linwood Holton. An
aide to Gov. Holton claimed yesterday
that he knew nothing about the invitation
but said that Mr. Holton may have
forwarded the offer.

Mr. Holton, a Republican who was
aided by President Nixon in his election
in 1969, has said that he would like to be
able to have the President speak at a Virginia
college.

However, Mr. Holton's aide was not optimistic
concerning the possibilities that Mr.
Nixon might speak at the University.

The aid said that the President was scheduled
to address the National Judiciary Conference
in Williamsburg in March and that he
might also put in an appearance at the Republicans
Governors Conference in April, also to be
held in Williamsburg.

Kennedy, Tunney Indefinite

According to Mr. Sumner, there are no
definite plans as yet for an address by either
Senator Kennedy or Senator Tunney. Senator
Kennedy has reportedly informed the Student
Legal Forum that an address by him at the
University would only be possible upon the
fulfillment of his senatorial duties.

The aide said that he strongly doubted that
President Nixon would make three separate
visits to one state in such a short period of
time. However, he added that an address before
the Legal Forum might be tied in with the
judicial conference in March.

Although the Nixon speech is far from
definite, the Legal Forum has scheduled several
talks by renowned figures and is still trying to
arrange visits by Senator Edward Kennedy and
Senator John Tunney.

Fortas Scheduled To Speak

On February 26, Abe Fortas, former
associate justice on the United States Supreme
Court, will speak at 8:30 p.m. in the New
Chemistry Building auditorium. Mr. Fortas has
served as a professor of law at Yale University
and has occupied positions on the Securities
and Exchange Commission, the Public Works
Administration, and the Department of the
Interior, including a term as Undersecretary of
the Interior.

On March 10, also at 8:30 P.M. in the
Chemistry auditorium, Leonard Woodcock,
President of the United Auto Workers, will
make an address at the University.

Prior to assuming his present position, Mr.
Woodcock occupied numerous key positions in
the U.A.W., becoming a regional director in
1947 and attaining the position of international
vice-president in 1955. Before becoming regional
director, Mr. Woodcock worked for Continental
Aviation and Engineering Co.

Since his attainment of leadership in the
U.A.W., Mr. Woodcock served on the National
Citizens Committee for Public Television, the
DetroEducational TV Foundation, and the
Joint Commission on the Mental Health of
Children.
