Few Girls Turn Out At Night
By 9 Tuesday night over 20
University student organizations had
set up booths in the lounge of Mary
Munford dormitory. The Emperor of
the Liquifactionist Party and Birth
Control Club was disseminating form
letters to be mailed to couples with
more than their quota of children and
the Gun Club had one of its members
sitting behind a table containing two
rather impressive weapons.
All was ready for the girls. And that
was just the problem. Although letters
had been sent to "all female students"
at the University, and the usual
publicity had appeared in The Cavalier
Daily about the event, only a few girls,
perhaps as many as there were
organizations represented, showed up.
Fortunately, the few girls that did
come managed to sign up for several
organizations. Delta Upsilon social
fraternity had 12 girls indicate their
interest in their "little sister" program.
And the Young Republicans had ten
young ladies when the evening ended
at 10:30 on their rolls.
Dicky Paine, secretary of the
University Union, the group that
sponsored the event, was pleased with
the turnout. He noted that most of the
girls currently attending the University
are second-year or beyond, and they
wouldn't really have too much interest
in joining these organizations.
He said the purpose of the evening
was for each organization to get a few
young ladies on their rolls so when the
University really becomes coeducational
next year, these girls already in
organizations can entice the new
first-year women to join them.
