Council Picks
Steiner Head
Pledging to be "methodical, not
radical," Beat Steiner was elected President
of the First Year Council last night.
In his short speech before the election, Mr.
Steiner mentioned his qualifications as a
member of his Student Council in high school,
and as Governor of the Key Clubs of New
Jersey.
He said that as President he would
concentrate on solving the minor problems of
living in a first year dorm - such as difficulties
with machines, refrigerators, light bulbs, and
any others which might arise. He also spoke of
the possibility of the First Year Council doing
some sort of service for the University
community.
After the Presidential election the other
First Year officers were selected. Phil Chabot
was elected Vice-President, after a speech in
which he emphasized his experience as a
Student Council officer and as a national
officer in the Order of the Arrow.
Windy Kidd was elected Secretary-Treasurer,
and Bruce Tyler, Chris Galvin, and Roger
Modjeski were chosen for the First Year
Judicial Council.
The defeated candidates included Al Gibson
and John Disciullo for President; Craig
Rettinger, Jim Witherow, and Bruce Quackenbush
for Vice-President; Tom Carpenter for
Secretary-Treasurer; and Wayne Staton, Gary
Lotz, Chris Mallis, Herb Bryant, Glen Silver,
and Rick Rothfeld for Judicial Council.
Previously, the candidates had met last
Thursday night and aired their views on a
number of issues ranging from ways to expand
the Council's influence to the possibilities of a
Council-sponsored dance.
Many of the candidates had written
statements and prepared them for distribution
among Council members, and these statements
were again presented Monday night.
In other action at the First Year Council
meeting, Student Council Secretary Kevin
Mannix brought up a poll which the First Year
Councilmen will supervise. It will attempt to
determine how many first yearmen would bring
cars to school next semester if the present
restrictions were relaxed.
