1200 March
In Peace Vigil

As students exited from the Concert of
Protest in Cabell Hall Wednesday night,
students gathered outside for the Candlelight
March that took some 1200 people up
McCormick Road to the Research Laboratories
for the Engineering Sciences.

The march which began about 10:15 pm
started as verses of "Give Peace a Chance" rang
through the crowd Candles were distributed to
the marchers but the supply was limited to 400
and many of the people were "candleless."

As the crowd marched out, many candles
were broken into halves and thirds to make the
supply go farther.

"We Shall Overcome"

The first group met by the marchers were
some people looking out from the Judge
Advocate General's School. As the spectators
watched marchers chanted "We Shall Overcome".

Continuing down to McCormick Road and
the old dorms, marchers trumpeted "Come join
us" to the first-year men who looked out from
their rooms. Some came out of their rooms to
join the marchers and many others came out to
shout at the marchers.

More Opposition

Similar chants by marchers were directed to
the new dorms as they continued on toward the
research laboratories. During the march, many
of the participants expressed utter bafflement
as to where they were being led.

When the crowd finally reached the research
laboratories, people surrounded the barb-wire
fence and yelled "what is going on." After a
few of these chants, the marchers began to
demand that the laboratories "get out." No one
was ever seen inside the confines of the gate
while the marchers yelled.

Confrontation

On the march back, the protesters were met
by a group of about 30 students behind the
new dorms with a sign saying "Peace through
victory." The marchers halted for a few
moments while shouts rang forth from each
side.

Continuing on back McCormick Road, the
crowd quickly dissipated as people went to
their dorms and cars.
