Counselor Tryouts Begin
With Introductory Talk
By Tom Jenks
There will be a meeting of all
students interested in applying for
dormitory counselorships at 7 p.m.
on Thursday in Gilmer Hall
auditorium.
At this meeting potential
applicants will be familiarized with
the procedures for application and
the responsibilities and rewards of
being a dormitory counselor.
Application forms will be
available at this meeting and at the
Housing Office in Emmet House
and must be returned to the
Housing Office by 5 p.m. on
February 20. All male students,
including graduate students, may
apply.
"There is always a large number
of persons interested in applying
however, there is a limited number
of positions available, and before
applying, a student should think
seriously about the responsibilities
that he will be undertaking," Bick
Cardwell, Chairman of Counselors,
told The Cavalier Daily yesterday.
"During the first weeks of
school a counselor is a first- year
man's only true link to the
University. The student looks to his
counselor for guidance in matters
of academics, extracurricular
activities, attitudes, and conduct.
Therefore, from year to year we
must be very selective in filling
counselor vacancies," Mr. Cardwell
continued.
General Qualifications
In stating the general
qualifications of a counselor Mr.
Cardwell said, "A counselor must
maintain the fine balance between
being a 'good guy' and a
disciplinarian, but he must also
serve as a mentor to students who
have problems that they are not
sure how to handle."
"The rewards of being a
counselor," Mr. Cardwell said,
"include free room and a private
telephone; however, the greatest
reward is the personal satisfaction
of helping a fellow student with the
many problems that he faces."
Critical Thinking
Applicants should sign up for a
"critical thinking and knowledge of
the University" test which will be
administered on Tuesday, February
18, and on Wednesday, February
19, in Gilmer Hall auditorium from
7 to 9 p.m.
Applicants should then arrange
for an interview conducted by
teams of counselors on the nights
of February 24, 25, 26, and 27.
General questions and hypothetical
problems that could arise for a
counselor will be presented to the
applicants during these interviews.
Appearance, Manners
"Appearance, manners, poise,
sense of humor, initiative,
leadership, and sincerity are some
of the qualities counselors will look
for in the applicants," Mr. Cardwell
said.
A second interview will be
arranged by the senior counselors
of each dorm. Those applicants
living in the dorms will be
interviewed by their dorm
counselors, senior counselor, and
resident advisor. Applicants not
living in the dorms should contact a
counselor(who is not a fraternity
brother) to arrange for his
recommendations and interviews.
The ratings of the interviews will
go to the Executive Committee on
Counselors along with each
applicants grade point average. The
Executive Committee will rank in
numerical order all applicants, and
this ranking will be given to the
Committee on Counselors, which is
composed this year of the Director
and assistant-Director of Housing,
Dr. Bice, Dean Williams, Mr.
Cardwell, Ed Hayes, who president
of the Upper class dorms, and John
Newman, who is Chairman of
Counselors for the graduate dorms.
