Alumni Return For Homecomings
Concerts, Parties, Rush
Planned For Weekend
By Thom Faulders

Jazz And Folk Instrumentalist Mike Gowen
Will Join With Other Performers Sunday In Amphitheater Concert
Once again that time is upon us
when not even the recent Lawn
improvements captivate our minds,
and the only solution to this
strange malady is to release oneself
from all inhibitions and partake
copiously in the intoxicating
atmosphere of the upcoming
weekend.
With athletic events, concerts,
rush, and the many alumni
returning to the school they once
attended, this year's Homecomings
Weekend has all the markings of
being the best yet.
Conditions are go weather wise
with the WCHV weather phone
predicting fair and cool with the
high between 68 and 74 for both
Friday and Saturday.
ABC Stores
Good conditions are also
reported at the three Charlottesville
Alcoholic Beverage Control stores
which guarantee an adequate
supply of liquor for the Weekend.
The Barracks Road store, however,
reports that it is out of Virginia
Gentleman Bourbon, while the
downtown store at 731 W. Main
Street reports that it has only three
cases of Cutty Sark Scotch left.
Athletically speaking, the
first-year men will lead things off
when the Cavayearlings meet the
freshman team from the University
of Maryland at 2 this afternoon in
Scott Stadium.
Thirty minutes later, at 2:30,
the University Soccer team will find
a revengeful team from Eastern
Mennonite College on the University
Hall field. Thirty minutes later, at
2:30, the University Soccer team
will find a revengeful team from
Eastern Mennonite College on the
University Hall Field.
Also today, the Virginia
Cross-Country team will run up
against powerful teams from the
University of North Carolina and
North Carolina State University,
here in Charlottesville.
Rush Begins
When the darkness comes
tonight, so will the rushees to the
33 fraternity houses about the
Grounds. Smokers will be held at
the houses from 8 to 12 and will
mark the first night of rush
following dormitory visits last
night. An invitation has been
extended to all first-year men to
visit any house.
There has been much confusion
as of late on the upcoming game
which manifested itself in pretty
orange and blue pins. Saturday
afternoon in Scott Stadium the
Wahoos will find out who Davidson
really is, and we are promised that
the Cavalier gridders will not be
surprised by an overpowering team.
In fact, there are no predictions on
the game because as Ted McKean of
The Cavalier Daily Sports
Department put it, "We decided to
channel our prediction efforts on
better games."
For those in a more traditional
mood, there are cocktails on the
Lawn after the defeat of Davidson
on the football field, For the
remainder of the students the
primary concern is dining before
University Hall starts ringing with
the soul sounds of the Temptations.
After being promised them last
year, the Temptations finally made
it to Charlottesville to do their
thing for the Wahoo fans. The
group known for such great singles
as "I Wish It Would Rain," "Beauty
Is Only Skin Deep," "My Girl," and
"The Way You Do The Things You
Do," has made appearances on The
Ed Sullivan Show, the Johnny
Carson Show, Rowan and Martin's
Laugh-In, and the Smothers
Brothers Comedy Hour.
Fraternity Parties
After the University Union's
concert, fraternities will again take
control of the social activities with
many parties and combos. Again
rush will be open and all students
who are interested in rushing are
invited.
Sunday will see a first at the
University. The Prism Coffeehouse
will present in conjunction with the
Music Department a free concert in
McIntire Amphitheater. The
concert, featuring several members
of the Charlottesville and
University communities, will start
at 2:30 p.m. and continue until all
performances are completed. The
primarily fold and jazz concert will
show the student interest in
American folk history.
Minor Sports
The two minor sports who have
in past years put the University on
the map, rugby and polo, will play
this Sunday. The polo team will
meet a strong Cornell team at 2:30
p.m. out on the polo grounds. The
Washington Rugby Club faces our
Wahoo ruggers that afternoon, on
Carr's Hill Field at 2.
The Virginia Players are
presenting a workshop
reproduction of M. Ionesco's "The
Leader on Sunday" at 3 p.m. The
play examines the concept of a
leader through the eyes of France's
most notorious avant-garde
playwright, M. Ionesco.
