Lake Retreat Brings
Exchange Of Ideas

By Rod MacDonald
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

"We learned of many various
viewpoints held by University
students this weekend, and that it is
a mistake to think that all our
students think alike," said
University President Edgar F.
Shannon, Jr., yesterday.

Speaking on the
administration-student leader
retreat held this weekend at the
University's biological station near
Blacksburg, Mr. Shannon told The
Cavalier Daily that "It was
primarily a time for exchanging
information, not for making
decisions. Each of us was able to
offer information and ideas to the
others, and to talk on the future of
the University based on these facts
(see editorial, p. 2).

Important Beginning

"This is an important
beginning," he added, "especially in
our sesquicentennial year. We can
now look forward to a successful
future based on a worthwhile past
rather than merely celebrate our
past. Our ability to talk this
weekend on a basis of fact and
information could advance us a
great deal in our goal of making this
University a better place for all to
live."

Mr. Shannon and several
administrative officials spent the
weekend at the Mountain Lake
station with members of the
Student Council and representatives
of major University student groups.
The topic for the conference was
"The University and the Future."

New Openness

Asked whether the faculty
members returned with any new
openness to student opinions, Mr.
Shannon replied, "The University
has always been unusual in respect
to its confidence in its students,
and the recent extension of visiting
hours is an example. We're far
ahead of many other universities in
that area. The conference did,
however, enhance the opinions of
the faculty of the high quality of
student leaders at the University."

Concerning making the
conference an annual event, Mr.
Shannon said, "I found it most
stimulating and rewarding, and if
the general reaction is shared by
others who went, we would
consider making it annual. But it
must not be made to interfere with
existing channels of student and
administrative government. The
conference was strictly for personal
understanding, not for
decision-making
