Invitation To First-Year Men

With this issue The Cavalier Daily enters a new era in its long and
varied history. It is an era which can fairly be labeled "revolutionary"
relative to its predecessors. For the first time the staff of The Cavalier
Daily, in its daily labors to put out the paper, is free of the many
problems and impositions inherent in having to work with a
commercial printer. We have expanded our Newcomb Hall offices,
and, in doing so, have installed the ultra-modern IBM Magnetic Tape
Selectric Composer system. This system, along with a new headliner
and new composing facilities, will enable the members of the staff to
print the paper themselves, to the point that it is ready for the offset
camera. Ours is a level of independence unparalleled in most school
newspapers.

As every year, we invite and urge all interested first-year men to
join our staff. This year, however, we especially urge that you join
now while the IBM training personnel are still here. There is a certain
amount of training necessary to operate the new machines, and
anyone who receives this instruction now would certainly have a
"head start" over anyone who joined later and had to be trained by
staff members.

So, if you think you might want to pursue your high school
journalistic efforts at college, or if you want to enter journalism anew,
we welcome you. The ability to type is very helpful, but not
absolutely essential. What we want and need are fresh, creative writers
who are willing to give of their talents to us and to the whole
University community. We guarantee that your efforts will be
rewarding.

For those who don't write, we have an increasingly busy and
complex business department; for those who don't count, we have a
flourishing photography enterprise. (For more detail on the operation
of the paper see page 5.)

So, whatever your talents, if you are interested in doing more at
this university than attending classes, we're waiting for you. The
opportunity is yours.
