Saunier's Statement

Gentlemen:

Some accounts of the recent exchanges of correspondence
between President Shannon and the officers of the Martin
Luther King Chapter of the Council on Human Relations, on
the subject of the University's policies of non-discrimination,
have been published in the press and discussed at some meetings,
but many significant details have been unreported or misunderstood.

Last week, after Mr. Shannon had released to the press his
copies of the letters he had received and after The Cavalier
Daily had secured from Mr. Yuhnke, President of the King
Chapter, permission for release of the letters he had received
from Mr. Shannon, copies of letters from April 18 through
May 9 were procured from Mr. Shannon's office so that Xerox
copies could be made of the 3,000-word exchange.

These copies have now been provided to the offices of the
Student Council and The Cavalier Daily in Newcomb Hall, and
to the Information Service in the Rotunda, so that students and
faculty members interested in the facts of the matter may read
or copy them at those locations.
