McCarthy Wins Choice '68 Vote

By Mike Russell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Local results of the Choice
'68 National Presidential Primary
concurred with the national
selection of Eugene McCarthy,
as 49.9% of the student body
turned out to vote.

First place votes favored McCarthy
with a six per cent edge
over Richard Nixon. Nelson
Rockefeller polled four per cent
lower than Nixon to take third
place. Robert Kennedy finished
fourth in the tabulation of first
choice votes.

Balloting for second and third
place votes both went to Nelson
Rockefeller. Eugene McCarthy
placed second in the number
two poll, Robert Kennedy third
and Richard Nixon fourth. Following
Rockefeller in third place
voting was John Lindsay in second,
Eugene McCarthy third and
Robert Kennedy fourth.

Referendum voting at the University
varied only slightly from
the national image. 55.83 percent
of the students indicated that
they favored reduction of the
war in Vietnam and this was
consistent with the overall vote.
On the topic of bombing, the
majority of students favored suspension,
while cessation edged
suspension nationally by less than
1 percent. Job training was polled
as the most urgent urban priority
with education second; nationally
these positions were reversed.

Twelve hundred schools participated
in the Choice '68 election,
and a total of 1,072,830
students voted. This figure failed
to reach the two million mark
which was set as the goal for the
primary in order to make it a
significant demonstration of student
opinion.

At the University, 49.9 percent
of the students voted. Eleven
more votes would have made it
consistent with the national turnout.
