Police Arrest Student
In Prescription Forgery

By MARGARET ALFORD
and BOB MAHONEY

A second-year engineering
student was arrested
Wednesday afternoon for
allegedly forging a prescription
to obtain drugs from a local
pharmacy.

George D. Maydwell, 19, of
Alexandria, was arrested at
Monticello Drug Store on
Cherry Ave. by
Charlottesville Police Officer
R. J. Hughes at 4:45 p.m.

Telephones Prescriptions

He had telephoned a
prescription for 50 capsules of
Quaalude to the store under an
assumed doctor's name.

Police received alerts of Mr.
Maydwell's calls from both the
Monticello Drug Store and
from Lloyd's Drug Store on
the Corner.

Charlottesville Police Chief
John D. Bowen said several
Charlottesville drug stores have
repeatedly received similar calls
recently. He believes Mr.
Maydwell alone has initiated
the calls.

Mr. Maydwell was booked
on two forgery charges and was
released on $1,000 cash bond.
No hearing date has been set.

Quaalude, trade name for
methaqualone, is a depressant
which acts as either a sedative
or a sleep-inducing drug,
depending on dosage. Quaalude
is not a controlled drug.

The Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) controls
certain drugs deemed
dangerous because of ill side
effects, according to Fred
Haar, Lloyd's Drug Store
pharmacist.

Controlled drug
prescriptions may be filled
only five times within a
six-month period and a doctor
must have authorization to
prescribe such drugs.

Abuse of Quaalude can
result in liver damage. If
combined with alcohol, it
produces a mild high.

Black Market

Quaalude is reportedly sold
on the black market under the
name "soapers," and is
popularly thought to be an
aphrodisiac. Mr. Haar denied
that the drug had
aphrodisiac-producing qualities,
however.

Mr. Maydwell's arrest is the
third arrest this year of
University students for illegal
drug possession. A University
Security officer Nov. 2 arrested
five students for marijuana
possession. An officer on
routine patrol observed the
students passing a pipe at 2:45
a.m. on a Maupin House
balcony.

City police Oct. 24
apprehended a third-year
engineering student at 10 p.m.
in his apartment for drug
possession.
