Committee Rejects Nov. 7 Holiday,
Offers Alternate Recommendation

By WILLIAM PAULEY

A Student Council proposal
for suspension of all classes on
Election Day, Nov. 7, was
rejected yesterday by the
University Calendar and
Scheduling Committee.

The Committee, however,
will recommend an alternate
proposal to University Pres.
Edgar F. Shannon Jr. which
would allow students to
participate in the "political
process on Nov. 7" without
fear of penalty for missing
classes.

The committee rejected
Council's proposal by a
majority vote under advice of
the Calendar subcommittee
which heard presentations of
the plan from Council
President Jim Rinaca and Vice
President Larry Sabato.

The alternate plan, also
proposed by Mr. Rinaca and
Mr. Sabato, was received
favorably by the
subcommittee.

The full committee adopted
the second plan, sending it to
Mr. Shannon for approval and
promulgation.

The adopted proposal
states: "It is the sense of the
committee that students who
miss classes in order to
participate in the political
process on Nov. 7 should not
be liable for penalty, and
instructors are requested to
consider the possibilities of
absenteeism in class in
scheduling exercises on that
day."

"Larry and I are
disappointed that the original
proposal was not accepted,"
Mr. Rinaca commented after
the meeting. "I accept this
substitute because I feel that
this will allow students to
participate to a greater extent
than if no action were taken at
all."

"I certainly hope that Mr.
Shannon will accept the
motion of the committee so
that students will not in any
way be penalized for voting,"
he continued.

"We hope that this
proposal, if approved, will
provide an incentive for
students of vote," he said.
