Miller Approves Advisor;
Alford To Assume Post
By PAT GRANEY
State Atty. General Andrew
P. Miller has officially
approved the nomination of
Law Prof. Neill H. Alford Jr. to
serve as University Legal
Advisor. The University's
Board of Visitors is expected
to confirm Mr. Alford's
selection this week.
Mr. Alford was nominated
to succeed Leigh B.
Middleditch, who resigned as
legal advisor in mid-July. Mr.
Middleditch, who has acted as
University legal counsel since
1968, will return to the
Charlottesville law firm of
McGuire, Woods and Battle.
In his new capacity, Mr.
Alford will serve in a newly
created post as Special Counsel
to University Pres. Edgar F.
Shannon Jr., and also as Legal
Advisor to the Rector and the
Board of Visitors. He will also
continue his law school
teaching duties.
A member of the University
faculty since 1947, Mr. Alford
has held the Doherty chair as
the University's School of Law
since 1966. A native of
Greenville, S.C., he received his
B.A. from The Citadel in 1940,
his L.L.B. from the University
in 1947, and his J.S.D. from
Yale in 1966.
Commenting upon his new
appointment, effective
immediately, Mr. Alford said,
"I am looking forward to
undertaking this new position
with great enthusiasm. I am also
glad that I will be able to
continue my teaching duties
with the law school."
Mr. Alford indicated that he
had been conferring with Mr.
Middleditch to become
acquainted with the
responsibilities of his new
position. "We anticipate a
smooth transition," he
commented.
