Former Chairman Urges
Enlarged Admissions Group
By Bill Fryer
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Dean David Shannon opened the
regular monthly College Faculty meeting
before a meager turnout just before the
Christmas recess. The main object of
discussion was the status of the Committee
on Admissions and generally how
students should be selected to serve on
regular faculty committees.
The whole question arose when
Charles Kaut of the Anthropology Department
announced that he was resigning
from his position as Chairman of the
Committee on Admissions. In doing so he
urged that the Committee be enlarged
from three to five faculty members and
from one to two students.
Arthur F. Stocker of the Classics
Department who chairs the Committee
on Nominations (the group who presents
certain names to the College Faculty for
consideration to serve on standing faculty
committees) also noted the need for the
enlargement.
Mr. Kaut found that in past years the
University's Committee on Admissions had
carried most of the burden in the area of
admissions policies. The role of the College
Committee was supposedly to prescribe admission
standards to be carried out by the Dean of
Admissions. He proceeded to observe that the
committee has not been fulfilling its function in
the past few years and that by enlarging and
revitalizing it, perhaps it will be able to make a
useful contribution once again.
Samuel Goldstein of Astronomy, James
Dent of Biology, and Charles Green of
Sociology had been proposed as new members
of the committee from the faculty. The
question of the new student member who will
join Kevin Mannix who already serves the
committee arose next.
Gordon T. Witcher, a black first-year
student, was the recommendation of Student
Council President Arthur 'Bud' Ogle, who
believed that there has been much interest
expressed in having a black student serve on the
committee.
