Drug Raids Nail 7 Students
By SAM BARNES
Seven University students,
including five members of Zeta
Beta Tau (ZBT) fraternity,
were arrested Monday night on
drug charges as a result of what
city Police Chief John deK.
Bowen called "flagrant
violations we just couldn't
ignore."
The drug raid, which began
at the ZBT house at about 8
p.m., netted about five pounds
of marijuana, most of which
had been made up into single
ounce bags, as well as a large
number of pills, other
unidentified drugs, and
narcotics paraphernalia, Mr.
Bowen said.
Those arrested at the ZBT
house were second-year men
Edward A. Chastka and Paul C.
Dawkins, charged with
felonious possession and
distribution of marijuana; and
second-year man Paul F.
Lumbye III and third-year man
Peter M. Dierks, charged with
possession and distribution of
marijuana.
Third-year man William
Wright, accompanied by his
lawyer, turned himself in to
police yesterday. Mr. Wright,

been charged with felonious
possession of marijuana.
Arrested at other residences
in the city were second-year
man John R. Parker of 770 C
Madison Ave., charged with
felonious distribution of
cocaine, and fourth-year man
Nicholas Mallis Jr. of 1541
15th St., charged with
possession and distribution of
marijuana.
Those who were arrested on
felony charges were detained
under $5,000 cash bond or
$10,000 property bond. Others
were held on $500 cash or
$1,000 property bond.
These arrests bring the total
number of University students
arrested on drug charges this
year to 18.
Mr. Bowen said the arrests
were the result of intelligence
work by city detectives and
denied that the raids were the
beginning of a "crackdown" on
student drug use. But he did
say that they were in part the
result of drug abuse at
fraternities becoming "more

time."
ZBT president David
Chalmers said police came to
the fraternity house Monday
night with a warrant to search
one of the rooms. During their
investigation they found other
