Strickland Replaces Hogshire
As University Students' Lawyer
By MARGARET ALFORD
Third-year law student
Diane Strickland will succeed
Ted Hogshire as University
students' attorney Sept. 1, it
was announced yesterday.
Mr. Hogshire, who assumed
the newly-created post last
September, will begin private
practice in Charlottesville. He
is a graduate of the University's
law school.
Mrs. Strickland has served C/D Mike Powell
this year as Mr. Hogshire's
assistant and as president of
the Legal Assistance Society.
He also previously directed
Madison Hall's Professional
Service Center, and was an
Diane Strickland
Legal Services Program which
sponsors the students'
attorney.
The Students' Legal
Services program was begun in
September to provide free legal
services and authorized legal
practice for University
students. The agency is
controlled by an advisory
committee of students, faculty
and administrators, chaired by
Law Prof. Brock Hornby.
The program, which
operates out of Madison Hall,
handles cases presented by
matriculated students on an
individual basis. Law students
aid in personal advising of
student clients.
The students' attorney can
neither file any actions against
the University on behalf of any
students, appear as counsel in
any proceedings against the
University nor represent
students in felony cases.
Rather, he typically handles
cases in which students are
victimized by private interests
outside the University
community.
"I expect the program to
function much the same as this
year," Mrs. Strickland said.
"We will continue to deal
specifically with landlord
problems caused by
misunderstandings in leases,
repairs, etc. and also with some
consumer problems."
With a potential clientele of
13,000 the students' attorney
and Student Legal Service have
met with success this year,
handling about 75 cases a
month.
"Even though this is an
exorbitant caseload," Mrs.
Strickland said,"without the
help of volunteer law students,
the workload would be
overbearing."
Mr. Hogshire was
unavailable for comment.
