Stadium Renovation Proceeds
With Norfolk Firm Contract

By JERRY DRESNER

A contract to conduct the
"feasibility study and
schematics" for the renovation
of Scott Stadium has been
mailed for signature by a
Norfolk architectural firm.

William-Tazwell Architects
will conduct the study for the
University Planning
Department. This agreement
was reached after negotiations
with Finch-Heery Architects of
Atlanta fell through.

According to University
Athletic Director Eugene
Corrigan, those negotiations
collapsed because the firm did
not "conform to the State's
financial standards."

"We will begin working on
the study during the first week
in March and our report will be
done in June," stated James
Williams of the
William-Tazwell firm. Mr.
Williams also revealed that the
cost of the study will be
$18,000.

Plans to renovate the
42-year-old stadium began in
October. Since then, the only
definite plans are to overhaul
the stadium in its present
location to a 40,000 seat
capacity.

Mr. Corrigan commented
that he hoped the new plans
could adhere to the basic
format of adding upper decks
above the bleachers.

"We would prefer not to
have to add end zone seats
because nobody wants to sit in
them. However, it is much too
early to speculate as to the
final design," he concluded,
"because the newly-contracted
firm has barely begun to study
the plans."

The feasibility study will
attempt to find architectural
solutions for enlargement of
the press box, addition of
assembly rooms for press
activities, improvement of
restroom facilities, restoration
of the President's box and
repairs to the deteriorating
concrete around the stadium's
lower wall in addition to the
basic problem of enlarging
seating capacity.

"There are many 'if's'
involved in what will be the
result of our study," remarked
Mr. Williams, "but if the
University approves it and it
they can raise the money, we
expect that it would be
implemented."
