Newspaper Elects 1972-73 Staff;
Wells Selected Editor-in-Chief

The Newly Elected Managing Board Of The Cavalier Daily

In staff elections held March 19,
Stephen Gilmer Wells was chosen
Editor-in-Chief of The Cavalier Daily for
1972-73.

Mr. Wells, a third-year drama major
from Norfolk, Va., is a former Features
Editor. As Editor-in-Chief, he will be
responsible for general administration and
supervision of all departments as well as
the formulation of editorial policy.

Walter W. Bardenwerper, a third-year
economics major from Waterford, Wis.
and a former Assoc. Features Editor, was
elected Editorial Editor. In this capacity
he will research and write editorials and
act as chairman of the Editorial Board.

Neill H. Alford III, a third-year
mathematics major from Charlottesville
and former City Editor, was voted
Managing Editor, in which position he
will be responsible for the day-to-day
operation of the newspaper, including
general supervisory powers over all
literary departments.

To round out the new Managing
Board, Edward W. "Kip" Klein III, a
fourth-year foreign affairs major from
Atlanta, Ga., and former Asst. Business
Manager was elected Business Manager,
having general supervisory powers over
the advertising and circulation
departments.

By unanimous vote, outgoing Editorial
Editor Robert Pegram Buford IV was
named the recipient of the Henry Noble
Taylor Award, which is presented
annually by the Seven Society to "that
member of The Cavalier Daily who best
exemplifies the traditions and ideals of
the University."

The award is given in memory of Mr.
Taylor, Editor-in-Chief of The Cavalier
Daily in 1949-50, who drowned while
serving as a foreign correspondent for
United Press International in the Congo.

Also by unanimous vote, outgoing
Editor-in-Chief Peter Huntley Shea was
awarded the Chase Stuart Wheatley III
Memorial Award, given annually to the
staff member "who has best
demonstrated outstanding service to the
University through this newspaper."

Junior Board positions of News Editor
went to Ann Brown and Philip H.
Kimball. Both are past City Editors.

Features Editors positions will be
filled by former City Editor L. Parkes
Brittain III and former Assoc. Features
Editor Patricia A. Kyle.

Douglas N. Doughty and John F.
Markon were chosen as Sports Editors,
Timothy B. Wheeler was named Projects
Editor, and Saxon W. Holt was elected
Photography Editor.

On the business staff, Mary Bland
Love became the new Asst. Business
Manager, while Al Glass and Betsy
Griffith were decided upon as Local
Advertising Managers and Debbie Rafal
became National Advertising Manager.

In the Circulation Department, Grey
Stiff was elected Circulation Manager,
and Bob Craine was voted Asst.
Circulation Manager.

City Editors on the News Board will
be Margaret Alford, Ellen Anderson,
Sandra Divine, John Epps, and Pat
Graney.

Assoc. Features Editors for the coming
year will be Andy Ballentine and David
Foster, and Assoc. Sports Editors will be
Bill Berno and Fletcher Thompson.

Night Editors elected were Sam
Barnes, Barbara Hand, Suzy Lawson, and
Tom Saunders, and Mike Burnett and
Drew Gardner were named Asst. Features
Editors.

The new Managing Board has selected
a six-man Editorial Board to serve under
Mr. Bardenwerper. Those who have
received appointments are former Sports
Editor Tom Bell, former News Editors
Bryan DeLaney and Barry Levine, former
Projects Editor Steve Grimwood, former
Features Editor Rob Pritchard, and
former Managing Editor (for 1970-71)
Fred Heblich.

In an effort to add needed depth and
dimension to the staff, the new Managing
Board, pending approval from the
newspaper's Board of Directors, has
revised the constitution to create three
new positions. Richard Jones and Fen
Montaigne have been appointed Assoc.
Projects Editors, and Phil Cocke will
become the first Accounts Director.

Mr. Wells said, "We want The Cavalier
Daily to grow, develop, and keep pace
with the University, and to be as
professional a college newspaper as we
can make it. We intend to implement
whatever internal or external changes it
takes to achieve that goal."
