State Allows
University
Construction

By CHIP LAND

Funds allocated by the Virginia
General Assembly will permit the
University to move ahead in its plans for
several major building projects.

Most important of these projects is the
new Graduate School of Business
Administration to be built on the Duke
tract west of University Hall.

The General Assembly had denied
funds for the graduate business building,
but reversed its decision last week and
allotted $3.2 million for the new facility.
Construction is scheduled to begin late
this year.

Another project to receive funds is the
Medical Center's health sciences library
and information center.

The new library and information
center will serve the students and
physicians at the Medical Center and will
relay information to physicians
throughout the state.

The General Assembly also approved
funds for renovation in the School of
Medicine and for completion of the
medical education building, a key to
increased medical school enrollment.

Scheduled to receive $257,000 is the
State Department of Mental Hygiene and
Hospitals for the planning of a psychiatric
institute at the University Medical Center.

The General Assembly authorized the
renewal of the bond issues for housing at
Lambeth Field for 1,000 students,
housing for 500 students near the new
law-graduate business area, and dining
facilities at the intersection of Alderman
and McCormick Roads.

Bond issue authorization was also
renewed for apartments for 200 students
at Copeley Hill, a dormitory for 300
student nurses, and parking garages for
Newcomb Hall, the Medical Center, and
other areas.
