Panel Discusses Plan
To Revise Counseling

By TOM SAUNDERS

The recent changes in the Resident
Staff program will be the subject of a
panel discussion-debate before the Raven
Society Tuesday, February 22.

The discussion, according to Paul
Hurdle, President of the Raven Society
and organizer of the debate, will be aimed
at "allowing the Society to help shape the
program."

The panel will be divided into two
opposing groups. Those who will be
defending the program will be D. Alan
Williams, Vice-President for Student
Affairs; Chester Titus, Associate Dean of
Student Affairs; and Richard Shutts,
Business Manager of the University.

Panel Members

Charles Whitebread, Assistant
Professor of Law and Resident Advisor of
the Watson-Dobie Association; Irby
Cathen, Dean of the College; Jim Malone,
Resident Advisor of the Webb-Balz
Association will challenge the changes in
the program.

Mr. Hurdle, who will moderate the
discussion, said that the debate should
center around the ways in which the
changes in terminology and focus of the
program will affect the University.

"The changes in the program are not
yet complete. They are still being worked
out," he said. "I hope that this type of
panel discussion will help to shape the
program."

Debate Procedures

Following opening statements by each
member of both sides of the panel, each
group will be allowed to make a brief
rebuttal. At that time, the panel will
entertain questions from the audience.

"Although there are definite elements
of a formal debate involved," Mr Hurdle
said, "the emphasis is going to be placed
on discussion of the issue rather than on
the oratorical skills of the members of the
panel. This will not be an open-ended
debate. We're hoping to answer some
questions."

The discussion will be held following
the business session of the Raven Society
at 8:00 p.m. in Jefferson Hall. Due to the
limitations imposed by the size of
Jefferson Hall, attendance will be
restricted to members of the Raven
Society only.
