The Committee on the Calendar will
hold an open meeting on Tuesday,
January 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the South
Meeting Room of Newcomb Hall.

According to Ralph W. Cherry, Curry
Memorial Professor of Education and
Chairman of the committee, the meeting
will be held in order "to hear
recommendations regarding the
University's future academic calendars"
from faculty, staff, and students.

Mr. Cherry stated that the meeting
"can be expected to have a major effect
on the structure of the annual calendars
during the decades of the 70's".

In addition, the committee invites
written statements, and stresses that
persons will be allowed to elaborate upon
them by oral testimony.

Some of the alternate plans proposed
for changes in the calendar have been
cited by the committee "by way of
illustration for the benefit of prospective
witnesses", said Mr. Cherry.

One change discussed by the
committee is the 4-0-4 or 4-1-4 system
(the numbers representing months in the
September to June sessions).

Another proposal involves changing the
system currently in use so that the first
semester will be completed before
Christmas and the second by mid-May,
and the summer session by early August.

Other adjustments that are under
consideration include the standard
quarter system, with brief vacations
between quarters; and the trimester
system, with brief vacations between
three semesters of equal length.

Mr. Cherry requested that persons
who desire to be heard at the meeting
send a written notice to him. They will
then be allotted a specific time for
testimony.

Persons attending the open meeting
without prior notification will be given
opportunities to testify after the
scheduled witnesses have been heard.

Mr. Cherry can be contacted in
Peabody Hall, room 113.
