Development Director
At University Dies

Richard L. Godine, 42, Director of
Development at the University and active
in the Charlottesville business
community, died yesterday at University
Hospital.

Mr. Godine had been appointed to
direct the University-wide development
programs early this year after a career in
the field of insurance, banking and
finance. For 11 years he was a partner in
Godine, Nesbit & Company, an insurance
brokerage form specializing in bank
fringe-benefit programs.

He was also founder and director of
the Jefferson National Bank in
Lynchburg and a former director of the
Thomas Jefferson Corporation in
Charlottesville.

University President Edgar F. Shannon
Jr. said Monday, "The University and the
Charlottesville community have lost a
truly outstanding young leader in the
death of Mr. Godine. His devotion and
contributions to the University as a
student, alumnus and more recently as
Director of Development were significant
and substantial. Our heartfelt sympathy is
extended to his family and we share their
loss."

Late Director Of Development

Active in a broad range of community
affairs, Mr. Godine was a trustee and
chairman of the executive committee of
St. Anne's-Belfield School Inc. and
former treasurer of Belfield School. He
was a former vestryman of St. Paul's
Memorial Church.

Baltimore Native

Mr. Godine, a native of Baltimore and
a graduate of St. Paul's School for Boys,
had maintained a constant interest in the
University following his graduation in
1953 with a bachelor's degree in
economics.

He held a life membership in the
University of Virginia Alumni Association
and was a former president of the
Maryland Chapter of the Association. He
was also a member of the Virginia
Student Aid foundation.

While a student at the University, Mr.
Godine was an outstanding lacrosse
player and was a member of the 1952
national championship team winning a
berth on the South All-Star and
All-American teams. He was a member of
Delta Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, the
IMP Society, president of the Boar's Head
Club and a member of the Farmington
Country Club and Farmington Hunt
Club.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline
Newbold Watson Godine, formerly of
Wynnewood, Pa.; a son, Richard L.
Godine Jr.; and three daughters, Caroline
W. Godine, Juliann Godine and Emilie
Jane Godine, all of Millstream Farm,
Earlysville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard Vincent Godine; a sister, Mrs.
Richard F. Harrall; a brother, Douglas
Munder Godine, and his maternal
grandmother, Mrs. August F. Munder.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday at St. Paul's Memorial
Church. Burial arrangements are
incomplete. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that contributions be made to
the renal unit at the University Hospital.
