Visitors Appoint New Faculty

By WAYNE MOXLEY

A past ambassador to Vietnam, a
former Peruvian Prime Minister and a
member of President Nixon's Council of
Economic Advisors were appointed to the
faculty last Friday by the Board of
Visitors in their monthly meeting.

Dr: Frederick E. Nolting Jr., former
ambassador to Vietnam, was named to
serve the University as
Diplomat-in-Residence until June, 1972. Dr.
Nolting brings "both scholarship in philosophy
and a practical diplomacy in international
affairs" to the University, noted Dr. David A.
Shannon, Vice President and Provost of the
University.

Former Peruvian Prime Minister Pedro G.
Beltran was appointed by the Board to serve as
Scholar-in-Residence during the current
semester. He is presently the publisher of the
newspaper La Prensa in Lima, a position he has
held since 1950.

The Board of Visitors also established last
Friday the Tipton R. Snavely Professorship in
Business Administration to honor the professor
emeritus of economics who played a leading
role in the planning and establishment of the
Graduate School of Business in 1955.

1000 Dollar Award

Dr. Snavely became the first person to earn
a Ph.D. degree in economics from the
University in 1919. He began teaching here in
1918 and retired in 1961 after chairing the
Department of Economics for 33 years. A
graduate economics library and the Tipton R.
Snavely Award have already been established in
his honor. The award presents 1,000 dollars for
the best doctoral dissertation by a graduate
student written during every three year period.

Dr. Nolting has participated in the U.S.
Foreign Service between the years of 1946 and
1964. During that time he served on the U.S.
delegation to the United Nations, as a
representative to NATO, and as ambassador to
South Vietnam from 1961 to 1963. Dr. Nolting
obtained his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from
Virginia and his M.A. from Harvard.

Peruvian Ambassador

Mr. Beltran represented Peru as ambassador
to the United States from 1944 to 1945 and as
delegate to the United Nations conference held
in San Francisco in 1945. He also has acted as
Peruvian Prime Minister and Minister of
Finance between 1959 and 1960. He then left
to begin his current position of professor at the
London School of Economics and Political
Science.

Dr. Herbert Stein, a member of President
Nixon's Council of Economic Advisors, was
named to become the A. Willis Robertson
Professor of Economics. He was also appointed
to be a member of the University's Center for
Advanced Studies.
