Allman Brothers Cancel Appearance

Group Faces Preliminary Hearing
After Alabama Heroin Arrest

By NEILL ALFORD

The Allman Brothers, who were
scheduled to perform for Homecoming
weekend at the University, have canceled
the performance due to a court hearing
they face in Alabama on drug charges.

Scheduled to perform at University
Hall this Saturday at 8 p.m., the group
must remain in Alabama for the hearing which
will take place this weekend or early next week.

Tom Collier, representing the P-K German
Dance Society, which is sponsoring the concert,
said that the Allman Brothers' road agent
telephoned him yesterday and informed him of
the conflict.

P-K German scheduled the Homecoming
concert over the summer. In addition to the
Allman Brothers, the society set appearances by
the Hampton Grease Band and blues musician
B.B. King.

Planning a concert for Midwinters Weekend
last year, P-K German also suffered a
cancellation by James Taylor. After the loss of
Mr. Taylor, the society attempted late
negotiations with other artists, but remained
unsuccessful. Under a new arrangement, P-K
German arranges concerts and furnished
publicity, while the University Union provides
financial backing.

The Allman Brothers were arrested last May
on heroin charges. A preliminary court hearing
was set originally for next Wednesday or
Thursday. When the group scheduled the
appearance here, the dates did not conflict.

The hearing has now moved up on the court
docket. It will begin as early as Friday or early
next week. The Allman Brothers will remain in
Alabama over the weekend in order to ensure
that they are present for the hearing.

Mr. Collier said that negotiations are now
underway for an appearance here by the
Allman Brothers on December 11 for a
Christmas concert.

The New York booking agency which
mediates arrangements between P-K German
and performers has attempted to schedule
another group to replace the Allman Brothers,
but Mr. Collier said it was unlikely that any
other group would be available this weekend.

He affirmed, however, that the Saturday
night concert, featuring B.B. King and the
Hampton Grease Band, will take place despite
the Cancellation.

Prices for concert tickets have not changed.
Student tickets bought in advance cost $3.25
and tickets purchased at the door will cost
$3.75. Advance tickets are available at
Newcomb Hall and Mincer's Pipe Shop.

Students wishing to obtain a full refund on
their tickets may do so at the University Union
office until Tuesday at 3 p.m. No partial
refund will be made.

In addition to the concert, Homecoming
activities this weekend include the football
game with Duke, scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Saturday in Scott Stadium. Alumni Hall will
hold open house before and after the game. A
Homecoming luncheon will also precede the
game. All alumni are invited to the luncheon, at
which box lunches will be sold.

The first-year football team will play
Virginia Military Institute at 2 p.m. Friday.

The University soccer team has scheduled a
match with Roanoke College for 2 p.m. Sunday
at University Hall field.

Also on Sunday, the University Union will
present two films in Wilson Hall auditorium.
The union will show "Gold diggers of 1945" at 7
p.m. and "42nd Street" at 9 p.m.
