'Hair' Cut
From Area
Engagement

The love-rock musical "Hair,"
tentatively slated to appear in
Charlottesville April 19, has canceled its
date at the University.

Newcomb Hall Director John Herring
has been negotiating with American
Theater Productions in attempting to
bring the "Hair" production to University
Hall under University Union sponsorship.

Tom Mallow, spokesman for the
American Theater Productions in New
York, cited proximity to Richmond and the
reluctance to play one night stands as the
factors in the decision to bypass Charlottesville
this spring.

When asked if the "Hair" company was
playing other one-night dates at colleges, Mr.
Mallow reported the company would be
appearing at Mankato State College in
Minnesota and at the University of Vermont.

In conversations with students at the
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University, The Cavalier Daily learned
yesterday that the ATP "Hair" company will
also be playing at VPI on May 6 for one night.

The University has come close to engaging
the production several times, each time having
the negotiations fall through. The company was
set to come to Charlottesville last year until the
group decided not to go on tour.

When negotiations opened again for the
April 19 date the University was asked to
provide a letter drawn up by the University
legal advisor stating that it was unlikely the
production would be closed down on obscenity
charges if it were presented in Charlottesville.

Under this pressure from Richmond and the
revamping of the tour from basically a
one-night, college campus tour to a tour with
longer consecutive runs, the contract with the
University was not finalized.

Mr. Mallow indicated that the company
would probably go on a college tour next fall,
and stated "We would be glad to play at your
campus at that time."
