Local Democrats Sponsor
Address By Senator Bayh

By Linda Eichelbaum

The New Democratic Coalition, in conjunction with the Young Democrats of
Charlottesville, will sponsor an address by Senator Birch Bayh who is considered by
some to be a possible candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

Mr. Bayh will speak here on March 30 following a fund raising reception for
Democrats in the Seventh District.

Possible Presidential Nominee

Mr. Bayh is the senior United States
senator from Indiana. He received his B.S.
degree from Purdue University and
graduated from Indiana State University
School of Law. The Senator spearheaded
the fight against the Senate confirmation
of Harold Carswell and Clement Haynesworth
who were nominated by President Richard
Nixon for the position of Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court.

Presently, Mr. Bayh is working on electoral
reform for national elections. He favors the
abandonment of the Electoral College in favor
of a strict popular vote.

Mr. Bayh has also served as Chairman of the
Judiciary Committee subcommittee on
Constitutional Amendments and Chairman of
the Public Works Committee of the United
States Senate.

Kit Sumner, President of the Student Legal
Forum, announced yesterday that Leonard
Woodcock, president of the United Auto
Workers, has cancelled his speech here.

The union leader was to speak on March 10
as part of the Student Legal Forum's program
of speakers. However, a strike of the Office
Workers Union scheduled for March 12 caused
him to cancel the engagement since he must
remain in Detroit next week.
