The faculty of the Commerce School
has announced that all Commerce
students who wish to take advantage of
the academic freedom offered by the
faculty must attend a meeting today in
the machine room from 10:50 to 11:10.

Option two, the only alternate offered
by the Commerce School faculty, says
that any student may elect to have his semester
grades as of May 12, 1970, if these can be
equitably determined. If they are not so
determinable, the instructor may assign a
pass/fall grade.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, students
were given three options by a meeting of
Department chairmen with Dean Shannon. A
final examination may be postponed to as late
as October 16, 1970; Course averages as of May
1 may be used; or alternate work, decided upon
by the faculty member and student in
consultation, may be submitted before June 3.

These options were adopted only in the
form of recommendations, but the statement
which was released said "...we are confident
that faculty members will abide by the spirit of
President Shannon's statement at the meeting
on the lawn on May 10."

In the School of Architecture, a group of
faculty members released a statement which
contained four points: "1. We support the
'strike' at the University in so far as it
condemns and protests (1) the continuing and
escalating United States involvement in
South-east Asia, and (2) the recent tragedy at
Kent State.

"2. We applaud the non-violent conduct of
the 'strike' and wish to express our admiration
for the democratic way in which divergent
views have been so far heard.

"3. We recognize our ethical and contractual
obligations to continue to make our services
available to the University while, at the same
time, supporting the principles of the 'strike.'

"4. We will approach constructively the
resolution of problems arising from the state of
'strike,' particularly with respect to problems
that may arise for graduating students."

The statement was signed by 16 faculty
members.

Architecture students can choose from
among three options, which were covered in a
release issued by the Dean's office. Students
can complete their course requirements as
formally scheduled; they can take a grade of
"incomplete," for which work must be
completed by September 21, 1970; or any
students who are degree candidates can submit
work until June 1, and take examinations until
June 2. Upon completion of this work, a
student will receive his degree, in June 1970.

Any student who wishes to take an
"incomplete" grade can delay until May 24,
1971 the final submission of work; such
students will receive their degrees in June 1971.

The School of Education sent out a
nine-point bulletin. The School will remain
open, and its academic standards will be
maintained. Individual professors remain
responsible for the specific requirements and
grading procedures of their courses.

Grades as of May 1, 1970 may be used as
final grades; or substitute assignments may be
submitted by June 3, 1970. Other options
include taking an incomplete at this time, and
submitting work by October 1, 1970; or
whatever else can be arranged with the
professor; in any case, students must set up
programs by May 22.
