Newspaper Staff Selects
Adams Editor - In-Chief
Thomas Cole Adams was chosen
editor-in-chief of The Cavalier Daily in
staff elections held on March 15.
Mr. Adams in a third-year College
student and a former city editor and news
editor.
In addition, William Byrd Fryer was
elected editorial editor. While the editor-in-chief
has general administrative and
supervisory authority over all departments and
is responsible for editorial policy, the editorial
editor is exclusively responsible for editorial
writing, with the approval of the editor-in-chief.
Managing Board
Also elected to the managing board were
Frederick Theodore Heblich, a third-year man
and former assistant features editor, as
managing editor, and Sam Dixon Graham, Jr., a
third-year man and former office manager, as
business manager.
Managing Editor
The Managing Editor has the direct responsibility
for the layout of the news pages and
general supervisory powers over all literary
departments. The Business Manager has general
supervisory powers over the advertising and
circulation departments.
Charles Alonzo Hite, III, outgoing editor-in-chief,
was unanimously voted the Henry Noble
Taylor Award, presented annually by the Seven
Society to "that member of The Cavalier Daily
staff who best exemplifies the traditions and
ideals of the University." The award is given in
memory of Mr. Taylor, Cavalier Daily editor-in-chief
in 1949-1950 who was killed while
reporting in the Congo.
Outgoing managing editor Roderick O.
MacDonald received the Chase Stuart Wheatley
III Memorial Award, given to the staff member
"who has best demonstrated outstanding
service to the University through this newspaper."
In elections to positions on the junior board,
second-year men Brian H. Siegel and Peter H.
Shea were named news editors. The constitution
of The Cavalier Daily had been amended to
allow the election of two news editors to
provide for the news editors to take over the
Monday edition. The position of Monday
Editor has been eliminated.
Second-Yearman
Second-year man Robert P. Buford IV was
elected Features Editor, and second-year men
Winston S. Wood and Davis R. Marshall were
chosen sports editors. Second-year man Richard
Pearson was chosen Special Projects Editor.
On the business staff, second-year man Doug
Golden and third-year man Jim Basl were
elected as Local Advertising Manager, and
first-year men Ben Gray was chosen Office
Manager. These four serve on the Junior Board.

Howard Weinberg were elected photography
William Fryer, Samuel Graham, Thomas Adams, and Frederick Heblich
chosen circulation manager, and second-year
man David R. Shriver was elected assistant
circulation manager.
First-year men Barry M. Levine, C. Mark
Pirrung, Robert U. Pritchard, and Jeffrey D.
Ruggles were elected city editors, and Stephen
F. Grimwood and Stephen G. Wells were
chosen associate features editors. First-year
men Bryan DeLaney, David Hall, and Mike
Leech, and second-year man Alan Featherstone
were elected night editors.
