ROTC Unhurt
By Lottery
By Donn Kessler
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
The draft lottery has seemingly not
affected the enrollment in the Reserve
Officers' Training Corps at the University.
In conservations with spokesmen from
each of the three ROTC units at the
University, The Cavalier Daily was informed
that attrition rates in each unit
were at a normal level.
Colonel James Robertson of the Air Force
stated that his unit had lost only one cadet due
to the student's having received a low number
in the lottery held last December.
Two other students left the unit, however,
for unknown or indeterminable reasons.
In total, the Air Science Department lost 15
cadets from last semester bringing it's total
enrollment to 135 students.
Captain Walter Blattmann of the Naval
Science Department stated that no cadet had
left Navy ROTC with the stated reason of a
favorable draft number. The Naval program lost
10 students since last semester. There are now
285 students in the Navy ROTC unit.
Army ROTC seems to be the program most
affected by the lottery. Three students left the
program due to high draft numbers, according
to Captain David Meade of the Army. Three or
four students also rejoined the program,
however, due to low numbers.
The Army's advanced training program has
also been affected by the lottery. This program
allows students who were not enrolled in ROTC
during their first two years in college to enter
the program in their third year.
According to Captain Meade the applications
for the advance program are now running
ahead of last year. The Army expects the
number of applicants to exceed last year's total
of 60. The deadline for this program is
February 27.
The total enrollment in Army ROTC
program is now 311, a loss of 10 students from
the end of last semester.
The total enrollment in all three ROTC units
at the University is now 731. The total male
undergraduate enrollment at the University is
4,915 as of February 5. This means that one
out of every six undergraduate male students at
the University is presently enrolled in ROTC.
