One of the most exciting musical groups in our country, the Paul Winter
Contemporary Consort, will perform in Charlottesville on Friday evening, February
20, at Lane High School, sponsored by the Virginia Museum Theatre Arts System.

Paul Winter conceived the group as a kind of folk orchestra as a voice (that of
three woodwinds and two strings) accompanied by guitar and percussion. The six
young jazz musicians create a unique musical concept synthesizing symphonic
orchestration, folk music, and jazz. "Consort" is a Renaissance term for a complete
family of musical instruments. Winter derived his music from the entire scope of his
musical experience, including classical music; the jazz experience of the years of his
first sextet; folk music learned in 26 countries while on tour, and from his
association with the folk-singing trio Peter, Paul and Mary.

Winter has a strong love of natural sounds and this is reflected in the
instrumentation of the Consort. There are no electrical synthetic sounds; no
machines. The Concert's percussion is unique and made up almost entirely of
resonant folk drums. Winter's exposure to folk percussion in Brazil is the reason for
this.

Tickets for the performance are available at Newcomb Hall, Mineer's, the Hi-Fi
House and Leggetts Barracks Road. Tickets will also be sold at the door. The price
is $1.50 for students.
